My name is Jack and I am the new team member here at Southampton Focus – nice to e-meet you! I look forward to sharing with you all about the new and interesting things going on in Southampton. I thought I’d get started by talking about a topic that is inundating all of our inboxes at the moment: Valentine’s Day. Without sounding like a floozy, I have been on dates with an array of guys. Some good. Some bad. And one particularly unsuccessful date, shared publicly with the nation… You can read it here if you would like to see what I mean.
I get what you’re thinking. How would I, being single, know anything about landing a partner? You’d be absolutely right, I have no idea – please send advice! Instead, this post is going to suggest a few ways to make the 14th February a special one.
Good company – be it friends or your significant other – and good food is one way to enjoy the love that will inevitably surrounding you in the coming days. With the West Quay extension there is plenty of choice, catering to you every foodie’s needs. For those of you who prefer a quieter setting, however, there is La Tavernetta. Situated just down the road from the O2 Guildhall, La Tavernetta is an Italian restaurant boasting great service and even better food.
Raise your hand if you like chocolate. Now keep it raised if you would consider that like for chocolate to actually be a love. It’s fine, my hand is still in the air too…
For the chocoholics amongst us and even those with more self-control (please send tips on refraining), there a range of options to indulge your choco-cravings. Cue, Frederick’s and Hotel Chocolat, to name a few. Frederick’s, based in the Marlands Shopping Centre, create traditional chocolate and more exotic options all in-store and also evoke childhood memories with their traditional sweets all displayed in sweet-shop style jars. Hotel Chocolat, based in West Quay, seduces you with its dark and daring flavours – not forgetting their range of Valentine’s Day gifts. That True Romantic Hamper looks pretty tempting if I do say so myself…
This of course refers to the age old option of going to the cinema. A type venue that Southampton is home to several of. This includes: ODEON, Cineworld, Showcase Cinema De Lux, Sonar Film, Hijack Cinema and the Harbour Lights Picturehouse. Those of you wanting to spark the saucy flame can catch Fifty Shades Freed at ODEAN, Cineworld and Showcase. Personal recommendation: Showcase has divine leather seats you can recline in, heightening the cinema experience. Looking a cheaper alternative to the mainstream venues? You can catch Downsizing over at Southampton Solent University’s Sonar Film for only £4.50 (£4.00 for SSU students)! Yes that’s correct, £4.50! Those after a more alternative experience may prefer another venue in the form of the Harbour Lights Picturehouse. Catch a preview of Oscar nominated, The Shape of Water, over at the Picturehouse this coming Thursday before it hits other cinemas! Last but not least is Hijack Cinema. The outdoors, pop-up cinema is perfect for viewing al fresco and cosying up to friends or partners this Valentine’s Day – just be warned, it is still very chilly, so make sure to wrap up and bring blankets!
