Businesses in Southampton that make a positive contribution to the city’s development as a visitor destination are to be recognised and celebrated in a brand-new, dedicated award scheme.
A celebration of Southampton Tourism, Hospitality and Retail, the awards will be known as The STAR Awards, and they have been launched by ROUTEpr and Events, in association with GO! Southampton, the Business Improvement District, with the aim of honouring and gaining public recognition for the achievements and positive contributions of professionals working across the hospitality, tourism and retail sectors.
As the largest cruise port in Europe with a shopping experience rated in the country’s top ten and high-profile international events such as the Boat Show, Southampton’s reputation depends on its strong hospitality offer. Local, domestic and international tourism are all increasingly important to the city’s economy.
Jackie Phillipson, co-founder of ROUTEpr and Events, the company organising and curating the Awards, said: “The STAR Awards deliberately feature hospitality, tourism and an expansion into retail reflecting the local business mix. Categories have a clear focus and are open to businesses, suppliers and individuals. Judges include independent trade and business executives, entrepreneurs, innovators and business educators.”
The inaugural STAR Awards cover the whole of the Southampton area and entrants may work in tourism, retail or hospitality or be a supplier to that industry.
Businesses may nominate themselves or can be nominated and should contact firstname.lastname@example.org an application or a nomination form.
A celebratory semi-finalist event will take place in February 2019 and the awards will culminate with a gala dinner in April 2019 which will recognise those who are acting as champions for our tourism sector and bringing positive economic impact to the city.
Once the entrants have been judged, semi-finalists will be selected from each category, 3 of which will go on to gain Gold, Silver, or Bronze STAR Award status. The Awards recognise new and innovative products, services and suppliers who bring economic value to the city. It will include businesses from the wider region if they can demonstrate that their business has a positive impact on Southampton.
Annaliese Hughes, Vice Chair of the BID said “The awards are attracting sponsors, partners and suppliers who appreciate the hard work and dedication needed to maintain and develop our exciting destination. Many are well-known in the local community; people with great connections who interact and trade with other like-minded businesses.”
