People in Southampton have now taken two million rides on Voi rental e-scooters.
The coral-coloured rental e-scooters have been operating in the city since March 2021, with just over 90,000 people signed up to ride them.
According to Voi’s externally validated carbon calculator, trips on e-scooters in Southampton have replaced an estimated 825,000 car journeys.
The use of e-scooters instead of cars in Southampton has saved the city from more than 420 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide emissions – the equivalent of over 51 million smart phone charges.
According to data from the most recent rider survey in Southampton, 37% of riders used e-scooters for their commute to work or education, with 16% using them for errands and shopping.
Over a third of riders combined their scooter ride with a journey on public transport.
Some 40% of riders said they used an e-scooter to make a journey which was previously too long, too expensive or not accessible.
James Bolton, General Manager, Voi UK, said: “Since we started operating in Southampton over three years ago, e-scooters have become an essential part of many residents’ lives.
“It’s great to reach another milestone in supporting people in Southampton to choose a safe, affordable and sustainable method of transport in the city.”
Cllr Eamonn Keogh, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said: “In reaching this milestone, we are thrilled to witness the growing enthusiasm for rental Voi e-scooters. We are delighted that so many users combine their rides with public transport. The Breeze app is so helpful to plan journeys using various modes of transport including buses and e-scooters plus more.”
Voi has just started operating rental e-bikes in the city, as well as e-scooters, after Solent Transport awarded the company a contract to be sole operator in south Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
